GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

This is an entry level position in Orenco's Safety and Environmental Compliance department. The Safety and Environmental Compliance Tech I assists in the implementation of policies and programs to ensure a safe work environment and continuous compliance with all applicable safety and environmental regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & KRA (Key Result Areas):

> Safety/Culture

  • Continuously maintains Orenco Management's safety, cultural, and professional standards.
  • Promotes, encourages, and reinforces a positive safety culture, safe practices, and a safe work environment to all employees.
  • Serves as a safety committee member.
  • Keeps work area clean and free of safety hazards.

> Program Coordination

  • Assists the department manager to ensure compliance with safety and environmental laws for Orenco's manufacturing sites.
  • Assists with the following duties:
  • Conducting hazard analysis of equipment, processes, and work areas.
  • Conducting ergonomic assessments.
  • Conducting accident/incident investigations and preparing reports.
  • Preparing safety and environmental reports.
  • Preparing and presenting safety and environmental training.
  • Conducting safety and environmental inspections.
  • Conducting environmental and industrial sampling.

> Record Keeping/Database Maintenance

  • Maintains environmental compliance databases.
  • Maintains safety compliance databases.
  • Builds and maintains knowledge base of federal, state, and local regulatory rules for safety and environmental programs.

> Work is to be done during manufacturing business hours, which may include occasional early and/or later shift as needed. Occasional long hours may be required.

> Regular, consistent, and predictable attendance is required.

> Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

A.S. Degree in a science discipline, or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of initial 8-hour Emergency Response & HW (HazWopper) Operations level training is required. Completion of the annual 8-hour HazWopper-Operations Level training is required thereafter. Training description: Emergency communication, alarms and evacuation routes, contingency plan implementation/emergency response procedures, emergency equipment use and inspection, incident response (fire, explosion, soil, and water contamination), and site shut down procedures. Hazardous waste management - handling and storage rules.
  • Completion of confined space and fall protection training.
  • Strong math and analytic skills.
  • Ability to recognize the need for and maintain strict confidentiality with a high level of discretion.
  • Ability to perform duties without supervision and exercise independent judgment with drive and self-motivation and who takes full ownership of their responsibilities with ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Ability to research, read, and understand technical data with emphasis on understanding detailed reports and interpret data as needed.
  • Ability to build and maintain knowledge base tracking systems.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are required. Ø Ability to communicate in a professional and courteous manner, and effectively and successfully interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and extreme variations in educational levels. Ø Strong computer skills with emphasis on spreadsheet and word processing software. Ø Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Ø Ability to demonstrate drive, self-motivation, and maintain a high level of quality throughout all job tasks and programs.
  • Is punctual, and able to be flexible and adjust to priority changes with little notice and to remain calm during confrontational or high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to use sound judgement and follow-through in problem-solving and decision-making processes.
  • Must have satisfactory driving record, maintain valid driver's license, and current insurance on personal vehicle if used for business. Must meet company insurability requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mixture of working conditions to include office, outdoor, and industrial/manufacturing settings. Occasional exposure to chemicals requiring proper use of PPE (personal protective equipment) including, but not limited to gloves and face shields. Job duties may require work outdoors in inclement weather.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Seeing, speaking, hearing, reading, writing, including time keyboarding, viewing a computer screen, and sitting. Intermittent physical activity including extended periods of time standing, walking on concrete floors and uneven surfaces, climbing stairs and ladders, reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, grasping, holding, repetitive foot and hand movement with good manual dexterity, twisting, squatting, bending, and stooping. Regular job duties require frequent unassisted lifting of up to 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 70 lbs., lifting over 70 lbs. must be assisted. Occasional travel with the operation of a motor vehicle is required.
